Adam Peaty faced a pivotal moment in his career just over a year ago. When his coach asked if he wanted to continue, Peaty felt overwhelmed and wanted to quit. “I didn’t even want to see a pool again,” Peaty confessed to BBC Sport, reflecting on his exhaustion and disillusionment. Peaty’s previous nine years had been nothing short of extraordinary. He won two Olympic golds, retained his title and broke the 100m breaststroke world record five times.  Moreover, he captivated the British public with his television appearances, further cementing his status as a sports icon.

Nevertheless, 2022 and 2023 brought a series of formidable challenges. Peaty’s relentless schedule led to burnout. Skipping a break after the 2021 Olympics, Peaty broke his foot, missed the 2022 World Championships and was unprepared for the Commonwealth Games. Consequently, his fourth-place finish there ended his winning streak in the 100m. Peaty admitted to experiencing a downward spiral, grappling with depression and a self-destructive lifestyle.

Additionally, his relationship with his son’s mother broke down, prompting him to take a break from swimming to focus on his mental health. He described his lowest point as a state of emotional numbness where he struggled to find color or optimism in his life. In contrast, upon returning to the sport, Peaty aims for a third consecutive Olympic gold in Paris. He credits his recovery to his Christian faith, gardening and journaling. Despite Qin Haiyang’s strong performance, Peaty’s April trials success has reignited his determination for Paris.

Peaty’s comeback, highlighted by a bronze medal at the World Championships and a strong showing at the trials, underscores his resilience. As he prepares for Paris, he remains driven by a fear of regret rather than a fear of losing. This new chapter, Adam Peaty 3.0, reflects his unwavering commitment to excellence and personal growth.
