Alexander Zverev Outlasts Holger Rune in French Open Epic
Alexander Zverev Secures a Thrilling Victory in the French Open
Alexander Zverev triumphed over Holger Rune, advancing to the French Open quarter-finals. The match, held in Paris, spanned four hours and 40 minutes with Zverev defeating Denmark’s Rune with scores of 4-6, 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. This match marked the second time in three days that a match at Roland Garros ended in the early morning hours. The previous instance was Novak Djokovic’s five-set victory over Lorenzo Musetti at 03:07 on Sunday. In the men’s fourth round, Zverev is set to compete against Alex de Minaur, who earlier on Monday defeated fifth seed Daniil Medvedev.
The match between Zverev and Rune, initially scheduled to start at 20:15 local time, didn’t begin until after 21:00 due to the extended match between Djokovic and Francisco Cerundolo. Despite facing allegations of assaulting an ex-girlfriend which he denies, 27-year-old Zverev, who is still in pursuit of his first Grand Slam title, managed to concentrate on his game in Paris. The match had its share of intense moments with Zverev losing his serve at the end of the third set. However, he regained control in the fifth set, breaking twice to secure his place in his 12th Grand Slam quarter-final.
Alex De Minaur Shocks Daniil Medvedev in the French Open
In another surprising turn of events at the French Open, Daniil Medvedev, the Russian fifth seed, fell to Australia’s Alex de Minaur. Despite receiving treatment for blisters on his feet in the second set and showing some improvement in the fourth set, Medvedev lost the match with scores of 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3. Throughout the match, De Minaur demonstrated his speed and strategy, keeping Medvedev on edge and drawing errors from him. This victory made De Minaur the first Australian man to reach the Roland Garros quarter-finals since Lleyton Hewitt in 2004.
After the game, De Minaur expressed his love for the clay court and his excitement about his unprecedented achievement in Paris. He acknowledged a young fan who had been cheering for him throughout the tournament and even invited him to his quarter-final match. De Minaur announced that he might consider having this super-fan join him on tour, given the positive influence on his performance.
