Amelie Mauresmo Enforces Stricter Rules at French Open

Amelie Mauresmo announced that the French Open has banned alcohol consumption in the stands to curb unruly behavior. This decision follows an incident where Belgium’s David Goffin had chewing gum spat at him during his match against France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. On Wednesday, women’s defending champion Iga Swiatek also requested fans to maintain silence during points and refrain from shouting.

Mauresmo acknowledged the enthusiasm of the fans but emphasized the need for boundaries. “We are pleased that people are passionate about watching tennis and expressing their emotions,” she said. “However, certain behaviors need control. Previously, we permitted alcohol in the stands, but that will no longer be the case.”

While officials will still allow alcohol in the concourses and around the grounds, they will enforce stricter measures in the stands. Chair umpires will also be more vigilant in demanding respect for the players and the game. Increased security will identify and caution offenders.

Mauresmo expressed optimism about the new measures: “I’m optimistic that people will respond positively. If not, we will implement further measures.” Player reactions to these changes vary. Goffin supported Mauresmo’s decision, believing it would prevent future escalations. “It was fine this year, but fans might push boundaries more each year. Who knows, they might bring firecrackers next,” said the Belgian.

Defending men’s champion Novak Djokovic also supported Goffin’s stance, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a respectful atmosphere. “I understand Goffin’s reaction because I have faced similar situations. Players should stand against disrespect and heckling,” said Djokovic, who won his match against Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena on Thursday.

Spain’s Paula Badosa, however, did not think Swiatek had much reason to “complain,” noting that on smaller courts, players can hear noises from surrounding areas. “I played on courts eight and nine, and you can hear everything. Swiatek is fortunate to play on Philippe Chatrier regularly,” Badosa remarked.

In response to weather delays that disrupted the schedule, Mauresmo announced an earlier start time of 10am [09:00 BST] on Friday for the outer courts. The delays have left 25 of the 64 second-round singles matches incomplete, with no doubles matches finished yet.
