Andrey Rublev Makes Epic Comeback in Sweltering US Open Heat
Andrey Rublev staged a remarkable comeback in sweltering conditions to defeat Arthur Rinderknech and advance to the US Open third round. The sixth seed found himself down two sets to none and struggled physically and mentally in the intense 33°C heat. Despite these challenges, Rublev rallied to win 4-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 in a grueling four-hour and six-minute match.
Both players used ice packs and fans to cool down, and Rublev even called for the doctor, expressing discomfort and feeling as if he had “a baby” in his stomach. Despite his exhaustion, Rublev stayed on court to sign autographs. Rublev will next face 32nd seed Jiri Lehecka, who also came back from two sets down to defeat qualifier Mitchell Krueger.
On day three in New York, fourth seed Alexander Zverev continued his quest for a first Grand Slam title with a convincing 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 victory over Alexandre Muller. Zverev, who reached the US Open final in 2020 and the French Open final earlier this year, battled doubts about his return to top form after a serious ankle injury in 2022. Zverev has won 54 singles matches this year more than any other male player.
He expressed delight at returning to this level and is eager to seize his opportunity. His next opponent will be Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry. American Frances Tiafoe and ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov also won on day three. Tiafoe led Alexander Shevchenko 6-4, 6-1, 1-0 when Shevchenko retired due to injury while Dimitrov defeated Rinky Hijikata 6-1, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
Defending champion Novak Djokovic will play in the night session on Arthur Ashe with Andrey Rublev and Taylor Fritz also set to compete.
