Andy Murray, Britain’s three-time Grand Slam champion is set to coach his former rival Novak Djokovic at the 2025 Australian Open. Murray, who retired in August after a 19-year playing career, expressed excitement about collaborating with Djokovic, stating, “I’m looking forward to being on the same side of the net as Novak for a change.” This marks Murray’s debut as a coach since retiring. The duo will prepare together during the off-season ahead of the tournament, scheduled for 12-26 January.
Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion and 10-time Australian Open winner, humorously acknowledged their new partnership by sharing a video titled, “He never liked retirement anyway,” highlighting their long-standing rivalry and friendship. Reflecting on their journey, Djokovic remarked, “We’ve pushed each other beyond limits for 25 years. I thought our story was over but it has one final chapter. It’s time for one of my toughest opponents to step into my corner.”
The collaboration comes after a challenging 2024 for Djokovic, who failed to win a Grand Slam for the first time since 2017, despite clinching an Olympic gold in Paris—an achievement he described as his “greatest.” Djokovic also ended his season early due to injury and parted ways with long-time coach Goran Ivanisevic. Murray and Djokovic share a storied history, with Djokovic leading their head-to-head 25-11.
However, Andy Murray’s victories in the 2012 US Open and 2013 Wimbledon finals remain highlights. The two also faced off in four Australian Open finals, all won by Djokovic. Murray’s coaching stint is a fresh chapter in his post-playing career. As Djokovic eyes a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam in Melbourne, their partnership promises to bring renewed energy and focus to the Serb’s campaign.
