Aryna Sabalenka triumphed over world number one Iga Swiatek for the first time this season, advancing to the Cincinnati Open final. Earlier in 2024, Sabalenka lost to Swiatek twice in the finals of the Madrid Open and Italian Open. On Sunday, Sabalenka secured a 6-3, 6-3 victory, overcoming Swiatek in straight sets and ending her losing streak against the Polish player.

Sabalenka, who will rise to world number two on Monday, faced significant challenges during the match. She failed to convert nine match points before finally clinching the win. Reflecting on her achievement, Sabalenka expressed relief and joy at reaching her first Cincinnati Open final, saying, “It sounds like I broke the wall finally.” She described her win over Swiatek as a tough battle but felt thrilled with the outcome.

In the final, Aryna Sabalenka will compete against Jessica Pegula, who defeated Spain’s Paula Badosa 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the other semi-final. Pegula has built a nine-match winning streak and aims to secure both the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open titles after already claiming the Canadian Open last week.

Sabalenka’s victory marks a significant milestone in her season, as she prepares for the final against Pegula, who has shown strong form throughout recent tournaments.
