Billy Harris and Lily Miyazaki Reach US Open Second Round

Billy Harris and Lily Miyazaki of Britain advanced to the second round of qualifying at the US Open, showcasing their strong performances. Harris, who debuted in the Grand Slam main draw at Wimbledon in July, secured his spot in the next round by defeating Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Meanwhile, Miyazaki, who also made her Grand Slam debut last year after winning three qualifying matches in New York, overcame Slovenia’s Dalila Jakupovic with a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Britain’s Jan Choinski moved on after beating Argentina’s Pedro Cachin 6-4, 6-2. Francesca Jones also advanced by winning a tightly contested match against Spain’s Rebeka Masarova, with scores of 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (10-6). However, Oliver Crawford fell to the USA’s JJ Wolf with scores of 6-4, 6-4 and did not advance. These successes add to the achievements of other British players who secured their places in the second round.

Heather Watson, Paul Jubb, and Sonay Kartal, who won their matches on Monday will join Billy Harris, Lily Miyazaki, Jan Choinski and Francesca Jones in the next round. Watson will compete against second seed Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Jubb will face Finland’s Otto Virtanen and Kartal will challenge Switzerland’s Simona Waltert. Jones will play against Japan’s Ena Shibahara and Choinski will go up against Valentin Vacherot of Monaco.

This strong showing by British players highlights their continued competitiveness at major tennis events.
