Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner Secure Quarter-Final Spots

Carlos Alcaraz moved closer to defending his Wimbledon title with a hard-fought victory over Ugo Humbert, defeating the 16th seed 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 to advance to the quarter-finals at SW19. The 21-year-old Spaniard extended his Grand Slam winning streak to 11 matches following his French Open triumph last month, crediting his high-level performance against Humbert. Reflecting on his win, Alcaraz expressed satisfaction with his play and highlighted the challenge of facing a left-handed opponent while focusing on his own game. He now prepares to face American Tommy Paul, who beat Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets.

Meanwhile, world number one Jannik Sinner overcame American Ben Shelton 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (11-9), despite Shelton’s strong effort with four set points in the third-set tie-break. Sinner advanced to face Daniil Medvedev in the next round, benefitting from Grigor Dimitrov’s early retirement due to a leg injury. In a match that seemed unlikely to match Alcaraz’s previous five-set thriller, he took a commanding two-set lead before Humbert rallied in the third set, breaking serve three times.

Alcaraz, visibly frustrated, regained momentum in the fourth set with strong crowd support, securing a crucial break and serving out the match to applause from Centre Court. On Court One, Sinner faced a resilient Shelton who fought back in the third set but ultimately succumbed to Sinner’s consistent play, including a remarkable between-the-legs shot. Sinner expressed relief in closing out the match in three sets, noting the challenge of saving multiple set points in the third set tie-break.

The day’s action showcased both Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s determination to advance in the tournament, setting the stage for compelling matchups in the Wimbledon quarter-finals.
