Carlos Alcaraz led Team Europe to a thrilling 13-11 victory at the Laver Cup in Berlin defeating American Taylor Fritz in straight sets. Coming into the penultimate match, Team World held an 11-7 lead but Team Europe capitalized on the format which awarded three points for each win on the final day. German Alexander Zverev started the comeback by overcoming American Frances Tiafoe with a score of 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 10-5, narrowing Team World’s lead to just one point.

Alcaraz then secured the decisive match, winning 6-2, 7-5 against Fritz. “We came here with a goal to win the Laver Cup, and I’m really happy we achieved it,” Alcaraz said, acknowledging Zverev’s crucial performance that set up the win. The competition began with Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo giving Team World an early advantage by defeating Norway’s Casper Ruud.

However, Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas responded by defeating Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis. Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov later put Europe ahead but the day concluded at 2-2 after Fritz and Ben Shelton claimed a doubles victory over Alcaraz and Zverev. Team World dominated day two, winning six out of eight points and extending their lead to 8-4. Alcaraz was the sole victor for Europe on Saturday while Tiafoe and Fritz triumphed in singles matches.

The final day started well for Europe, who were looking to improve on their 13-2 loss in 2023. Despite Shelton’s win over Daniil Medvedev putting Team World close to victory, Alexander Zverev’s timely win set up Carlos Alcaraz to clinch the title. With this win, Europe has now claimed five out of seven Laver Cups since its inception in 2017.
