Coco Gauff’s quest to defend her US Open title ended in the fourth round as she lost to Emma Navarro with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. The third seed Gauff struggled throughout the match, hitting 19 double faults including 11 in the decisive third set. Her performance faltered notably in the final game where three double faults handed Navarro the victory.

Navarro, a 13th seed, achieved a significant milestone by reaching the US Open quarter-finals for the first time. Reflecting on her achievement, Navarro expressed her excitement, noting the special significance of playing in her hometown. She had previously defeated Gauff at Wimbledon just two months prior and despite Gauff’s efforts to stay focused, Navarro’s consistent play especially in the crucial moments, secured her advancement.

Coco Gauff’s bid to become the first woman to defend the US Open title since Serena Williams in 2014 was thwarted by her serving issues. Despite a strong comeback in the second set and support from the crowd, her repeated double faults in the final set proved costly. Navarro will face 26th seed Paula Badosa in the quarter-finals, who advanced by defeating Wang Yafan.

The win over Gauff not only propels Navarro into the world’s top 10 but also marks a notable rise in her career. Having reached her first WTA Tour semi-final in 2023 and winning her maiden title in Hobart earlier this year, Navarro continues to build on her promising trajectory in professional tennis.

Reflecting on her progress, Navarro acknowledged surpassing her own expectations and looking forward to further successes in her career.
