Dan Evans Falls to De Minaur After Historic US Open

Dan Evans known for his marathon matches, succumbed to fatigue in his third-round defeat to Alex de Minaur at the US Open. Despite a valiant effort and a historic first-round win against Karen Khachanov in the longest match in US Open history, Evans struggled to maintain his energy. After leveling the match at one set all, he required a medical timeout as De Minaur seized control, winning 12 consecutive games to secure a 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Evans expressed his respect for De Minaur, acknowledging his own physical limitations and the appreciation for the Australian’s endurance and sportsmanship. De Minaur, the 10th seed will face fellow Australian Jordan Thompson in the fourth round. The winner of that match could potentially meet British number one Jack Draper in the quarter-finals.

Draper advanced to the last 16 with a commanding 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Botic van de Zandschulp, capitalizing on the Dutchman’s upset of Carlos Alcaraz in the previous round. Draper having previously struggled with injuries showcased a high level of performance and composure in the muggy conditions at Flushing Meadows. Dan Evans remarkable tournament run, highlighted by his record-setting match, ended on a low note.

He succumbed to physical exhaustion and hip issues during his defeat. Despite the disappointment, he received a standing ovation from the crowd for his efforts and resilience. Meanwhile, Draper having overcome a challenging year plagued by injuries is optimistic about his chances in the wide-open draw and aims to reach his first Grand Slam quarter-final.

In other US Open news, Jessica Pegula advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Jessica Bouzas Maneiro while Karolina Muchova and Caroline Wozniacki also moved forward with straight-set victories.
