Diego Forlán Set for ATP Tennis Debut in Uruguay

Diego Forlán the former Manchester United striker is set to make his professional tennis debut in an ATP doubles event in Montevideo, Uruguay next month. The 45-year-old, who retired from football in 2019 will team up with Argentine Federico Coria at the Uruguay Open. Forlán, who showed promise as a tennis player during his teenage years, has been participating in ITF Masters events, most recently competing in the 45-and-over category.

However, the upcoming tournament is a recognized ATP event that belongs to the second-tier Challenger Tour meaning Forlán needed to secure a wildcard entry. Federico Coria, Forlán’s partner, currently ranks 101st in the ATP singles rankings having achieved a career-high of 49 in 2023. This partnership marks an exciting transition for Forlán, who gained fame as a footballer known for his skills on the pitch.

Forlán began his professional football career with Manchester United in 2002 where he made 98 appearances before moving to Villarreal in La Liga. During his time in Spain, he won the prestigious European Golden Shoe twice, awarded to the top scorer in Europe. His football accomplishments include winning the Golden Ball at the 2010 FIFA World Cup where Uruguay finished in third place.

Additionally, he helped his national team secure the Copa America title in 2011.
