Emma Raducanu Champions Independence: ‘At My Own Pace’

Emma Raducanu of Britain emphasized that she’s setting her own pace following a confident first-round victory over Sloan Stephens at Eastbourne. The 21-year-old recently faced criticism for skipping the French Open and opting out of the Olympics. After her 6-4 6-0 win over Stephens, she expressed her sentiment by writing “at my own pace” and drawing a winking face on a TV camera lens.

“When asked about her message, Raducanu stated, ‘I’m going to do things on my own time, at my own pace, and I’m in no rush to do anything.'”

Raducanu, who captured headlines in 2021 with her historic US Open victory, acknowledged that her career has experienced ups and downs since then, including injury setbacks during the 2023 season.

Reflecting on external pressures post her major win, Raducanu admitted, “At such a young age, it’s easy to get caught up in it.” She acknowledged her past tendency to overplay, which led to multiple injuries due to insufficient training and recovery time.

Looking ahead to Wimbledon, where she and fellow Briton Katie Boulter will compete, Emma Raducanu affirmed her focus on the grass-court season and gradual return to full fitness. Despite facing criticism for her tournament choices, she remains committed to her own approach, guided by close advisors who understand her game and needs.

Raducanu’s next challenge is against world number five Jessica Pegula in the second round, promising to test her recent form and resilience.
