Emma Raducanu believes her encouraging run at Wimbledon has reignited her motivation for the season. New Zealand qualifier Lulu Sun defeated the 21-year-old 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 in the fourth round. Despite the loss, Raducanu expressed optimism about her future, noting that reaching the fourth round of a major for the first time since winning the 2021 US Open was a positive step.
Raducanu, who will re-enter the world’s top 100 next week, said, “I feel good about things going forward. I feel optimistic. As bitter as it is to take, I think [this defeat] happened for a reason. You don’t want things to happen too easily and too quickly. I had that before. I don’t necessarily want just a massive spike.” She acknowledged that Sun outplayed her in a fascinating contest.
Raducanu managed to win the second set but struggled in the decider after needing treatment for a fall. She missed last year’s Wimbledon due to surgeries on both wrists and her ankle, and said, “Six months ago when I was starting out after surgery, I would have signed for the fourth round at Wimbledon. Of course, I’m disappointed. Of course, I want more. It fuels the fire and makes me more hungry.”
Emma Raducanu also addressed her decision to withdraw from a mixed doubles match with Andy Murray, citing wrist stiffness. She defended her choice, despite some criticism, saying, “With every decision, people are entitled to their opinions. I think in this sport, especially as an individual, you have to make your own calls and prioritize yourself. Especially with my history, I just had to put myself first.”
Former world number one and 2021 Wimbledon champion Ashleigh Barty commented that Raducanu now has a solid foundation to build on. Barty noted Raducanu’s improved life balance, fitness, and continuity, suggesting she is in a good position to move forward.
