Ewen Lumsden of Scotland and 17-year-old Mia Wainwright of England triumphed at the inaugural Tennis Scotland Open Tour finals, broadcast live by BBC Scotland. Lumsden, ranked 601st in the world, avenged his loss in last year’s final by defeating top seed Stewart, ranked 520th, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. In addition to his singles victory, Lumsden also claimed the men’s doubles title alongside former world number 44, Jonny O’Mara.
Stewart the defending champion had earlier won his semi-final match against English third seed Liam Hignett, beating him 6-3, 6-4. Lumsden the second seed comfortably dispatched James MacKinlay 6-0, 6-1 in his semi-final. In the women’s final, Wainwright ranked 595th in the world junior rankings overcame top seed Emma Wilson, 27 from Newcastle, 7-6, 6-2.
Wainwright’s victory capped an impressive run as she easily defeated Aimee Knowles, 6-2, 6-0, in the semi-finals. Wilson, who entered the tournament as a wild card and ranked 983rd in the senior rankings, cruised past 16-year-old Teodora Prisadnikova, winning 6-0, 6-1. Both Lumsden and Wainwright delivered exceptional performances.
Ewen Lumsden claimed both the singles title and a doubles victory while Mia Wainwright still a teenager secured a stunning win over the seasoned Wilson. The event marked a milestone for Tennis Scotland with BBC Scotland’s live coverage bringing attention to the rising stars of the sport.
