French Open, Andy Murray may have competed in his final singles match losing to Stan Wawrinka in a one-sided first-round clash between the veteran players. Murray, 37, hinted that this year could be his last on tour and chose not to undergo surgery on an ankle injury to participate in Roland Garros. However, his lack of court time was evident in a 6-4 6-4 6-2 defeat to the 39-year-old Swiss.
It was Murray’s first appearance on Paris clay since his first-round exit in 2020 and only his second since a tough loss in the 2017 semi-finals – both against Wawrinka. Murray acknowledged the challenge, stating, “It was always going to be tough. Stan has played brilliant tennis on that court over the years.” Despite Murray’s defeat, his French Open journey is not over as he has entered the men’s doubles alongside Dan Evans.
In another match, Jack Draper faced a setback as he lost to Dutch qualifier Jesper de Jong in a five-set battle. Draper, ranked 35th in the world, struggled with his serve, landing only 50% of his first serves and winning just 51% of second-serve points. While Draper expressed frustration with his performance, he acknowledged the need to work on his serve to improve his game.
Despite the defeat, Draper found encouragement in his physical resilience, reflecting on his progress since last year’s struggles.
