Harriet Dart advanced to the US Open second round with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory over Chloe Paquet while qualifier Jan Choinski fell just short in a five-set thriller on his New York main-draw debut. Dart, currently ranked a career-high 78th in the world, showcased her form by quickly building a 4-0 lead in the first set and then breaking Paquet’s serve again to close out the set.

Despite a brief lapse in the second set, Dart regained control to secure her spot in the next round after 76 minutes. She will face 19th seed Marta Kostyuk, who defeated McCartney Kessler. In contrast, Choinski, who reached the main draw after three successful qualifying matches, lost a grueling match 6-2, 6-3, 5-7, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 to Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena.

Choinski struggled with unforced errors and missed five break points in the final set’s first game. Despite battling a severe cold and sinusitis, Choinski showed resilience by leveling the match after being down two sets and a break. He ultimately fell after four hours and 31 minutes with Carballes Baena regaining composure after an extended bathroom break.

Choinski, who switched allegiance to Great Britain in 2019 will take satisfaction from his performance despite the disappointment. He earned £75,000 in prize money and aims to climb the rankings after a season of inconsistent results. Meanwhile, Harriet Dart’s progress marks an encouraging start to her campaign with her mother in New York as her coach, although she jokingly noted that the family dog remains the top priority.

On Tuesday, Jack Draper, Katie Boulter, Emma Raducanu and Dan Evans will compete in their opening matches.
