Iga Swiatek Soars: Advances to Wimbledon Third Round
Iga Swiatek advanced to the third round of the women’s singles at Wimbledon with a resilient straight-set victory over Petra Martic on Centre Court. Swiatek overcame challenges from Martic to win 6-4, 6-3, breaking Martic’s serve late in both sets for victory. Despite Martic taking a back injury timeout during the first set, Swiatek maintained her focus and emerged victorious. This triumph extends Swiatek’s impressive winning streak to 21 matches. Despite her five Grand Slam titles, Iga Swiatek has faced challenges on grass and has not surpassed the Wimbledon quarter-finals.
However, her past achievements demonstrate her potential to overcome these difficulties and make a breakthrough in the future. She will next face Yulia Putintseva, who upset Czech 27th seed Katerina Siniakova earlier in the tournament. Elsewhere in the women’s draw, American fifth seed Jessica Pegula suffered a surprise defeat, falling to world number 42 Wang Xinyu in a three-set battle, 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 6-1. Wang’s victory sets up a third-round clash with Britain’s Harriet Dart.
Meanwhile, French 23rd seed Caroline Garcia was also eliminated, losing 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to world number 97 Bernarda Pera of the United States. Despite windy conditions affecting play at SW19, many other seeded players cruised to victory in straight sets. Defending champion Elena Rybakina overcame German Laura Siegemund 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and will face Caroline Wozniacki in the next round. Wozniacki, a former world number one, defeated Canadian 30th seed Leylah Fernandez 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in a hard-fought match.
Ons Jabeur beat Robin Montgomery 6-1, 7-5 and advances to face Ukrainian 21st seed Elina Svitolina next. Svitolina advanced by defeating German Jule Niemeier 6-3, 6-4. American 11th seed Danielle Collins beat Hungary’s Dalma Galfi 6-3, 6-4 and will meet 20th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia in the next round. Haddad Maia advanced due to a walkover. Madison Keys beat Wang Yafan 6-2, 6-2, and Jelena Ostapenko won 6-3, 6-0 against Daria Snigur.
