Iga Swiatek’s the current world number one in women’s tennis, is aiming to celebrate her 23rd birthday with a victory that could edge her closer to clinching her third consecutive French Open title in Paris this Friday. Swiatek has had a remarkable 16-match winning streak at Roland Garros and is looking to join the elite ranks of players who have secured three successive French Open titles. In the third round, she will face off against Marie Bouzkova from the Czech Republic.
Swiatek’s journey at the French Open hasn’t been without its challenges. She notably saved a match point in a nail-biting encounter against Naomi Osaka. However, she has shown great resilience and determination throughout the tournament.
In addition to Swiatek’s match, there are several other exciting women’s singles matchups to look forward to. Coco Gauff, the American third seed, will take on Dayana Yastremska from Ukraine. Ons Jabeur from Tunisia, seeded eighth will clash with Canada’s Leylah Fernandez. Marketa Vondrousova from the Czech Republic will face France’s Chloe Paquet.
In the men’s competition, Italian star Jannik Sinner, seeded second, will resume his quest for a second consecutive Grand Slam title against Pavel Kotov from Russia. Spanish third seed Carlos Alcaraz will square off against American Sebastian Korda in the night session match. Other matchups include Andrey Rublev from Russia against Matteo Arnaldi from Italy and Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece facing China’s Zhang Zhizhen.
Rain disruptions have plagued play on the outer courts at Roland Garros, prompting organizers to enforce a ban on alcohol consumption in the stands to curb unruly behavior. The forecast suggests a likelihood of further interruptions on Friday, with rainy conditions expected to persist until Sunday.
Murray and Evans are set to start their men’s doubles campaign against Brazil’s Wild and Argentina’s Baez. Murray, aiming for Olympics, teamed with Evans before, notably at the Citi Open in Washington last year. Other Britons, Joe Salisbury, Jamie Murray, and Lloyd Glasspool, are also set for men’s doubles action on day five.
Notable matchups include Salisbury and Rajeev Ram against Ariel Behar from Uruguay and Adam Pavlasek from the Czech Republic, and Murray teaming up with New Zealand’s Michael Venus against Spanish duo Pedro Martinez and Jaume Munar. In the women’s doubles, Katie Boulter and Heather Watson will start their campaign against Chan Hao-ching from China and Veronika Kudermetova from Russia.
