Jack Draper Claims ATP 500 Title, Reaches Career High
Jack Draper felt frustrated a year ago after injuries forced him back to the ATP Challenger Tour, despite the predictions of his greatness. Fast forward to autumn 2024 and the 22-year-old left-hander celebrates his biggest victory yet: an ATP 500 title in Vienna which propels him to a career-high ranking of 15th. Draper’s inner belief has grown significantly. After defeating Russia’s Karen Khachanov in the Erste Bank Open final, he expresses his determination to challenge top players like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz next season.
Last October, Draper had just re-entered the top 100 and lamented the harsh realities of professional tennis especially after a shoulder injury hindered his progress. This year, he has shown remarkable growth by winning his first ATP Tour title in Stuttgart and reaching the US Open semi-finals. He also became only the fourth British player since 2009 to win an ATP 500 event.
Draper credits much of his success to improved fitness having played 58 matches this season, the most in his career, thanks to a strong partnership with physical trainer Steve Kotze. Moreover, Draper has made strides in improving his serve working briefly with coach Wayne Ferreira to enhance his first-serve percentage. He achieves an impressive 78.6% win rate on first serves this season, ranking among the best on the ATP Tour.
Despite his achievements, Jack Draper recognizes the need for further improvement, particularly in managing anxiety during critical matches. After feeling nerves during the US Open semi-finals, he commits to addressing these challenges. With a focus on physical fitness and gaining experience, Draper eagerly anticipates competing with the sport’s elite.
