Jack Draper, the British number one admitted that he had a “difficult” time after people questioned his integrity following his controversial win over Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Cincinnati Open. The 22-year-old secured victory when the umpire failed to spot the ball hitting the ground before Draper struck it on match point. Replays supported Auger-Aliassime’s claim that the ball had hit the frame of Draper’s racket and the floor but without replay technology available, the point stood.
Draper insisted that he hadn’t seen the ball hit the ground and would have replayed the point if the call had been made. Speaking to BBC Sport ahead of the US Open, Draper acknowledged that criticism, especially from other players, challenged him. He emphasized his commitment to honesty and integrity, stating, “It’s one of the most important things to be honest, do the right thing, be a good person – more than just a good tennis player.”
Despite the controversy, Draper praised Auger-Aliassime for handling the situation with maturity, acknowledging that it was a tough moment for both players. Draper also expressed the need for more video technology in tennis, aligning with players like Novak Djokovic who called for better systems to prevent similar incidents. The US Open has expanded its video review system, allowing umpires to check incidents like double bounces and player touches.
Jack Draper urged the ATP to work toward finding solutions to such issues. Additionally, Draper revealed his decision to split from coach Wayne Ferreira, opting to return to a single-coach approach. Describing himself as an “overthinker,” Draper believed that simplifying his coaching setup and sticking to one voice would be best for him.
