Jack Draper has expressed that reaching his first Grand Slam quarter-final at the US Open means “the absolute world” to him after his decisive 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Tomas Machac. The 22-year-old Briton’s performance was exceptional and he became the first British man to reach the Flushing Meadows quarter-finals since Andy Murray in 2016.
Draper credited his success to his solid execution of the basics and his ability to increase his level when needed. Despite losing their previous three encounters, Machac struggled against Draper’s focused play and the match lasted just one hour and 44 minutes. Draper, who remains unbeaten in the tournament will face 10th seed Alex de Minaur in the next round.
His impressive year includes an ATP title in Stuttgart and a victory over Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz at Queen’s. In the match, Draper overcame a challenging start from Machac, who initially imposed himself with powerful forehands. Draper adjusted quickly, breaking Machac’s serve and taking advantage of errors. Draper’s effective baseline power and strategic play allowed him to control the match and win decisively.
His calm demeanor and strong performance drew praise from commentators and former players. Tim Henman described Draper’s performance as a “masterclass,” highlighting his efficient movement and controlled aggression. Leon Smith, Great Britain’s Davis Cup captain noted Draper’s deep love and curiosity for the game while Annabel Croft admired Draper’s composure and sensational play.
With a quarter-final place secured, Jack Draper aims to become the first Briton to reach the men’s semi-finals in New York since Murray’s 2012 victory.
