Jack Draper Soars to US Open Semis, Bids for Top 20 Spot

Jack Draper, the 22-year-old rising star in tennis, has reached the US Open semi-finals without dropping a set showcasing his evolution from a boy with big dreams to a formidable competitor. Former British number one Laura Robson described Draper as an “absolute tennis keeno,” highlighting his transformation following a growth spurt that brought him to 6ft 4in.

Draper known for his aggressive baseline play and dominance in service games has made significant changes to his routine to enhance his performance. After an observation by Cameron Norrie during a 2022 practice, Draper eliminated phone use during matches to improve his focus. He also cut out caffeine following advice from coach James Trotman.

Draper acknowledged that excessive caffeine had previously led to agitation and disrupted his concentration. Draper’s support system includes his coach, Trotman, who has been with him for three years, and his older brother Ben, who serves as his agent. Ben a former college tennis player boasts a 6-1 victory over Jack in their only encounter.

Their parents, Nicky and Roger Draper have deep connections to tennis with Nicky being a former junior player and coach, and Roger having run the Lawn Tennis Association. Draper also credits his grandparents for their support, especially his grandfather, who follows his matches closely despite his advancing age. On court, Draper’s team includes physio Will Herbert and fitness coach Steve Kotze, who has helped him manage physical setbacks.

Former top-10 player Wayne Ferreira briefly contributed to Draper’s coaching but left after four months allowing Draper to streamline his coaching to one voice. Currently, Jack Draper is set to break into the top 20 and remains confident that his peak is yet to come, anticipating his best years to be at 25.
