Jannik Sinner Advances to US Open Quarters

Jannik Sinner the world number one, displayed top form to defeat Tommy Paul 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, securing a spot in the US Open quarter-finals against Daniil Medvedev. The match held in a vibrant night session on Arthur Ashe saw Sinner overcome an early deficit, rallying from a double break down in the first set to dominate Paul in the ensuing tie-breaks.

Sinner, who has won five of his last six meetings against Medvedev will face the 2021 US Open champion after Medvedev’s dominant 6-0, 6-1, 6-3 win over Nuno Borges earlier on Monday. Sinner and Medvedev are the only Grand Slam champions remaining in the men’s singles draw. Their last encounter was a five-set battle in the Wimbledon quarter-finals in July where Medvedev emerged victorious.

Despite stumbling and clutching his hip during the match, a recurring issue for him this year, Jannik Sinner showed resilience. He secured the victory in two hours and 42 minutes, demonstrating his strength. He expressed optimism about his physical readiness for the upcoming match against Medvedev, aiming to provide a thrilling contest for fans.

Medvedev’s win came after a brief interruption due to a fire alarm which halted play as the building housing the electronic line-calling team was evacuated. Despite the disruption, Medvedev quickly regained his momentum to advance to the quarter-finals. He humorously recalled his last loss at this stage to Nick Kyrgios, who interviewed him post-match.

Britain’s Jack Draper also made headlines with a straight-sets victory over Tomas Machac marking his first Grand Slam quarter-final appearance. Draper will face 10th seed Alex de Minaur, who advanced by defeating Jordan Thompson in a four-set battle. De Minaur’s victory marks his third consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final, a feat last achieved by Australian Leyton Hewitt in 2004.
