Jannik Sinner made history by becoming the first Italian to win the ATP Finals title, defeating American Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 in the final on Sunday. This victory marks a major milestone for Sinner, who had lost in last year’s final to Novak Djokovic. The world number one remained flawless throughout the tournament, finishing undefeated and without dropping a set. He claimed $4,881,500 in prize money for his efforts.
In a rematch of the U.S. Open final, Sinner broke Fritz’s serve with a precise drop shot to take a 4-3 lead in the first set. He then sealed the opener with his 10th ace. Fritz, who became the first American to reach the ATP Finals final since James Blake in 2006 struggled to recover as he dropped serve in the second set after hitting a forehand long. Sinner closed out the match in just 85 minutes to claim his first ATP Finals title.
Jannik Sinner expressed his joy after the win, particularly as it was his first title on home soil. “It means so much to me. I’m very happy about that, it’s very special,” he said. The 23-year-old also credited his consistent high-level performance throughout the tournament as the key to his success. Despite the loss, Fritz will reach a career-high ranking of fourth when the new ATP rankings are released on Monday. Fritz praised Sinner’s exceptional year, stating, “It’s really impressive.”
In the doubles competition, Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz triumphed over Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic, winning 7-6(5), 7-6(6) to become the first German duo to claim the ATP Finals doubles title.
