Jasmine Paolini: Italy's Tennis Surge and the Rise of Young Talent

Jasmine Paolini reflected on the growing popularity of tennis in Italy, a country traditionally dominated by football. She noted that, although football remains the number one sport, tennis is quickly catching up, thanks in part to Italy’s strong performances on the global stage. Paolini’s own rise to fame began after she reached the French Open and Wimbledon singles finals but the real shift came when she won a gold medal in Olympic doubles.

Fans responded overwhelmingly when she returned to Italy with many non-tennis fans recognizing her in the streets, a stark contrast to her earlier encounters with tennis fans. Paolini admitted feeling some discomfort with the increased attention especially when people particularly older women, would approach her for hugs or kisses. Despite the attention, she tries to enjoy it, viewing it as a positive sign of her growing popularity.

Although she occasionally avoids places where she might be recognized, Paolini cherishes the appreciation she feels from her fellow Italians especially since she’s rarely at home. Paolini attributed the surge in tennis popularity to Italy’s success on the tennis court including Jannik Sinner’s rise to world number one and the country’s triumph in team events like the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup.

She also highlighted the Italian Tennis Federation’s role in developing young talent including offering wildcards to promising players. The sport also benefited from the Covid pandemic which led many people to take up tennis. As a result, tennis participation grew with a 30% increase in kids joining tennis clubs last year. Jasmine Paolini hopes to continue inspiring both young players and devoted fans in 2025.
