Katie Boulter Powers GB into United Cup Quarter-Finals

Katie Boulter secured Great Britain’s spot in the United Cup quarter-finals in Sydney by defeating Australia’s Olivia Gadecki in straight sets. Boulter’s 6-2, 6-1 win which took just 70 minutes, ensured that GB topped Group F as they needed a straight-set victory in any of the three rubbers to qualify. The victory came in the first match of the tie, allowing Great Britain to secure qualification before Australia won the subsequent two encounters.

Australia’s Alex de Minaur dominated GB’s Billy Harris 6-2, 6-1 and de Minaur teamed up with Gadecki in the mixed doubles to defeat Charles Broom and Olivia Nicholls 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). Earlier in the tournament, Great Britain had beaten Argentina 2-1 and although all three teams in the group finished on the same points, GB claimed top spot due to winning the most sets.

Katie Boulter, reflecting on the pressure, admitted that former British number one Laura Robson had reminded her the night before that she needed to win in straight sets to ensure qualification. Meanwhile, Alexander Shevchenko played a key role in helping Kazakhstan knock out defending champions Germany, who were without world number two Alexander Zverev due to a biceps injury.

Poland also reached the quarter-finals with Iga Swiatek defeating the Czech Republic’s Karolina Muchova. The outcome sets up an exciting quarter-final stage for Great Britain and the other qualifying teams as the United Cup continues to deliver thrilling matches.
