Lily Miyazaki was unable to advance to the quarter-finals of the Jasmin Open after losing to Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic. Miyazaki, currently ranked as the British number five was striving to reach the last eight of a WTA Tour tournament for the first time in her career. However, Ruzic ranked 173rd in the world defeated Miyazaki with a score of 6-3 6-1 in 71 minutes.

Ruzic will now face Italian seventh seed Lucia Bronzetti, who secured her place in the quarter-finals by overcoming American Ann Li with a 6-4 7-6 (7-3) victory. Despite Lily Miyazaki’s setback, British tennis achieved a notable milestone as Sonay Kartal reached the first WTA quarter-final of her career. Kartal earned her spot in the last eight with a straight-set win over Japan’s Mai Hontama.

This represents a significant achievement for Kartal, marking her progress in the competitive tennis circuit. In another positive development for British tennis, Francesca Jones advanced to the quarter-finals of a WTA 125 event held in Slovenia. Jones hailing from Bradford and aged 23, defeated Croatia’s Petra Marcinko with a score of 7-5 6-1. Jones’s victory propels her into the next round where she will face Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva from Andorra.

The results from these tournaments highlight both the challenges and successes experienced by British players on the international stage. Miyazaki’s defeat in Tunisia underscores the competitive nature of the WTA Tour while Kartal and Jones’s achievements reflect the rising talent and potential within British tennis.
