Mika Stojsavljevic Narrowly Misses First WTA Win in Thrilling Match

Mika Stojsavljevic the British teenager, narrowly missed her first WTA victory. She lost to Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima in a grueling first-round match at the Pan Pacific Open. The 15-year-old, the reigning US Open girls’ champion, started strong with a 3-2 lead in the first set. However, she lost momentum after being broken three times, ultimately dropping the set 4-6. In her first main-draw match, Stojsavljevic showcased her resilience by saving two match points in the second set. She then clinched the tie-break 9-7, leveling the match.

She carried that energy into the final set by breaking Uchijima, who is ranked 57th in the world which allowed her to take a commanding 5-2 lead. However, Mika Stojsavljevic missed her opportunity to serve out the match which allowed Uchijima to come back and equalize at 5-5. The tie-break became tense as Stojsavljevic saved two more match points but Uchijima ultimately secured the victory with a final score of 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (8-6).

Uchijima will advance to face top seed Zheng Qinwen in the second round. In other results, British number one Katie Boulter advanced to the last 16 after defeating Australia’s Priscilla Hon 6-1, 6-4.  Boulter dominated the match, breaking Hon three times in the first set and twice in the second converting all her break points. The world number 33 will next face Japan’s Kyoka Okamura.

British men’s number one Jack Draper won his opening match at the Vienna Open. He defeated Japan’s Kei Nishikori with a score of 7-6 (7-5), 7-5. Draper will face Luciano Darderi in his next match. Meanwhile, British number two Cameron Norrie exited the tournament after losing to Frances Tiafoe with a score of 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
