Novak Djokovic, on his 37th birthday, clinched a victory against Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann in a rain-interrupted match, advancing to the quarter-finals of the Geneva Open. Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam winner, participated in the ATP 250 tournament in Switzerland for the first time as part of his preparations for the French Open, securing a 6-3 6-3 victory. This win marked his 1,100th victory on the ATP Tour, making him only the third player, alongside Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer, to achieve this milestone.

Following the match, the crowd serenaded Novak Djokovic with a rendition of ‘happy birthday,’ and tournament officials presented him with a chocolate birthday cake. Reflecting on the victory, Djokovic expressed gratitude, stating, “My birthday wouldn’t have been the same if I had not won the match. I’m very grateful for all the people that came out to support me and thank you for the birthday song, that was very special for me.”

The world number one, yet to reach a final in 2024 will face either Canada’s Denis Shapovalov or Dutch sixth seed Tallon Griekspoor in the next round. In the opening round, Hanfmann defeated Britain’s Andy Murray 7-5 6-2. Despite a rain delay, Djokovic broke Hanfmann’s serve in the sixth game and then powered through to secure the victory. As the French Open approaches, Djokovic is determined to defend his title and clinch victory for the fourth time, showcasing his formidable skills on the court.
