Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios lost in the second round of the men’s doubles at the Brisbane International, eliminated by top-seeded Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus. Despite Kyrgios’ return to singles after an 18-month injury layoff, the Australian showed signs of discomfort during the match, occasionally massaging his right arm between serves. He had earlier lost a challenging three-set match to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, leaving him in “throbbing” pain and unsure about his participation in the Australian Open.

In the doubles match, Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios struggled at the start, losing the first set 6-2. However, they fought back, winning the second set 6-3 and forcing a deciding tie-break. The duo came close to winning when they led 8-6 but Djokovic’s double fault shifted momentum in favor of Mektic and Venus. The top-seeded pair seized the opportunity, winning the next three points to secure a 6-2, 3-6, 10-8 victory.

Mektic expressed his joy after the win, calling it “incredible” to defeat such renowned players at the start of the year. He acknowledged the challenges of playing against Djokovic and Kyrgios but felt thrilled with the victory. Although Djokovic’s doubles campaign ended, he advanced to the quarter-finals in singles where he will face France’s Gael Monfils. Djokovic, aiming for his 100th career ATP title, continues his pursuit of success at the Brisbane International, maintaining strong singles form despite the setback in doubles.
