Novak Djokovic has revealed that his decision to appoint former rival Andy Murray as his coach took many by surprise but he believes it is “exciting for tennis.” Murray, who retired in August following a stellar career will join Djokovic in the off-season and work with him leading up to the Australian Open. Djokovic, who holds a record 24 Grand Slam titles, admitted the call caught Murray “a little off-guard,” but the pair quickly connected and Murray agreed to take on the role within a few days.
Djokovic explained that after six months of reflection on what he needed at this stage in his career, he realized the ideal coach would be someone who had experienced the challenges he is facing—specifically a former Grand Slam champion and world number one. He said that Murray having faced similar pressures throughout his career was the perfect fit. “It was a surprise for everyone including me,” Novak Djokovic said. “But it’s exciting for tennis.”
This marks the first collaboration between the two players, who have competed against each other in some of tennis’ biggest rivalries. The news comes after a challenging year for Djokovic, who failed to win an ATP title for the first time since 2005 and did not claim a major title for the first time since 2017. Despite his struggles, Djokovic remains motivated and has big plans for the future.
Reflecting on the departures of fellow ‘Big Four’ members Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, Djokovic acknowledged the emotional impact but confirmed that he still has the drive and physical ability to compete at the highest level. “As long as my body holds up, I’ll continue to push for the biggest titles,” Djokovic said.
