Novak Djokovic Fit for Wimbledon After Surgery

Novak Djokovic has announced that he is “pain free” after successfully completing an exhibition match against Daniil Medvedev ahead of Wimbledon next week. The Serbian player tore the medial meniscus in his right knee during the French Open and underwent surgery three weeks ago, casting doubt on his participation at the All England Club.

Despite wearing strapping on his knee, Djokovic defeated world number five Medvedev 6-3, 6-4 on Friday and appears ready to compete at Wimbledon, starting on July 1.

“I really enjoyed myself out there,” said the 37-year-old. “Playing pain-free tennis is the best feeling. I was pain-free and very happy with that. It was a great test against one of the world’s top players.

“I’ve played a few practice sets, but I wanted a real test. The test was very successful, so I’m pleased. It’s been an intense three weeks of rehab after surgery, spending many hours recovering.

“I always wanted to give myself a chance to be in London. I think my surgeon, who is here, deserves a lot of credit. I’m taking it day by day and hoping for the best.”

Novak Djokovic, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, has been drawn against debutant Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic in the first round. If he competes, it will be his 19th appearance at the grass court Grand Slam.

Djokovic has reached the Wimbledon final for the past five years, losing the 2023 final to Carlos Alcaraz in a memorable five-set match on Centre Court.

“He seems fine,” said Medvedev. “But you never know how he feels inside. A five-set match on grass is tough on the knee, so we’ll see how it goes. But he seemed to be moving well, even though I caught him off guard a bit.
