Novak Djokovic’s pursuit of Australian Open glory is well-known but this time, there’s a notable difference—his great rival, Andy Murray has joined his team. Djokovic, aiming for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title, announced Murray’s appointment in November. The two have shared many memorable battles over the years with Murray retiring from tennis last year. Djokovic has credited Murray with offering a fresh perspective on his game, as few understand his style as deeply as Murray.

Their rivalry has delivered some of tennis’s most iconic moments:

  • 2011 Australian Open Final: Djokovic defeated Murray in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3, marking his first Grand Slam victory over Murray and beginning a series of intense final matchups.
  • 2012 Australian Open Semi-final: Their five-set, nearly five-hour clash remains one of their most gripping encounters, with Djokovic rallying from two sets down to win 6-3, 3-6, 6-7, 6-1, 7-5.
  • 2012 US Open Final: Murray triumphed over Djokovic to end Britain’s 76-year wait for a male Grand Slam champion, claiming a 7-6, 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2 win.
  • 2013 Wimbledon Final: Murray clinched his first Wimbledon title, defeating Djokovic 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 securing another major win over his rival.
  • 2015 Australian Open Final: Djokovic continued his dominance in Melbourne, defeating Murray in four sets to claim another Australian Open title.

Their rivalry reached its peak in 2016 with Novak Djokovic emerging victorious in most of their encounters. However, a 2017 Qatar Open final would mark their last meeting as Murray’s injury struggles took over. Now, as teammates, they aim to bring out the best in each other once more.
