Novak Djokovic has stated that he intends to return to the Australian Open next year if he remains “fit, healthy, and motivated.” The 37-year-old Serbian, who aimed for an 11th men’s singles title at the Australian Open had to retire from his semi-final match against Alexander Zverev due to injury. As he left the court, Djokovic acknowledged the 15,000 fans at Rod Laver Arena, a venue he regards as his “second home.”
When asked if this could be his final appearance in Melbourne, Djokovic expressed uncertainty, stating, “I don’t know. There is a chance. Who knows? I’ll have to see how the season goes.” He acknowledged the importance of staying fit and healthy but remained unsure about his future schedule. This marks the second consecutive year Djokovic has lost in the Melbourne semi-finals.
In recent years, Novak Djokovic has scaled back his schedule, focusing on the major Grand Slam tournaments. With 24 Grand Slam titles to his name, he now pursues a 25th to break the record held by Australia’s Margaret Court. Djokovic has had the most success at the Australian Open, followed by Wimbledon where he has also excelled.
Despite some doubts over his ability to outlast younger competitors over five sets, Djokovic showed he can still compete at the highest level, notably defeating Carlos Alcaraz earlier this year. However, pushing through injuries has taken its toll. Djokovic remains determined to continue playing, but as he approaches his 38th year, injuries and fierce competition may influence his decision to keep competing in future Grand Slams.
