Novak Djokovic secured a comeback victory in his Australian Open opening round, defeating 19-year-old American Nishesh Basavareddy 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. This win marked Djokovic’s first match with former rival Andy Murray in his coaching box. The 37-year-old Serb, aiming for a record-extending 11th Australian Open title and a 25th Grand Slam, enlisted Murray’s help in his pursuit of tennis history.
“I’m thrilled to have him in my corner,” said Novak Djokovic, acknowledging the oddity of having his longtime competitor now supporting him. Djokovic will face Portugal’s Jaime Faria in the second round. Murray, who retired in August 2023 sat calmly in Djokovic’s box, offering gentle encouragement and advice. Djokovic appreciated the support, noting, “He gave me great advice during the match.”
In the first set, Djokovic struggled, committing uncharacteristic errors and Basavareddy capitalized, winning the set. However, the teenager began to cramp in the second, allowing Djokovic to reduce his mistakes and take control. The match had a curious connection, as Basavareddy’s coach, Paul Goldstein had once defeated Djokovic in the first round of the 2006 Australian Open, the last time Djokovic lost in the opening round of a Grand Slam.
Murray a seven-time Grand Slam champion, spoke highly of Djokovic’s legacy, stating that the Serbian could be considered the greatest athlete of all time, especially if he continues to win Slams at 38 or 39 years old. “If he can beat top players like Alcaraz and Sinner in big matches, he’s got a legitimate claim to be the best athlete of all time,” Murray said, highlighting the excitement of being part of Djokovic’s historic journey.
