Novak Djokovic Withdraws from ATP Finals Due to Injury

Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the ATP Finals due to an ongoing injury. The 37-year-old Serbian, who holds a record seven titles at the prestigious event had already secured qualification as the sixth most successful player on the ATP Tour this season. Djokovic confirmed his withdrawal on social media, apologizing to fans and wishing all players a great tournament. He did not specify the nature of his injury and announced that he would not play again this year.

Despite a strong 2024 campaign where he won 37 out of 46 matches and claimed Olympic gold in Paris, Djokovic has not won an ATP title this year marking his first season without an ATP victory since 2005. It is also the fourth time since 2008 that he has failed to capture one of the four Grand Slam titles. The 24-time Grand Slam champion had previously downplayed the importance of the ATP Finals, stating his priority was the Grand Slams as he looks to extend his career.

His next planned tournament is the Australian Open, starting on January 12 where he will aim for a record-breaking 25th major singles title. With Djokovic’s withdrawal, the eight-player field for the ATP Finals in Turin is now set. Norway’s Casper Ruud, Australia’s Alex de Minaur and Russia’s Andrey Rublev have qualified filling the last two spots.

The tournament will feature Italy’s Jannik Sinner, Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, Germany’s Alexander Zverev, Russia’s Daniil Medvedev and American Taylor Fritz.  The 2024 event, taking place from November 10-17 in Italy will be the first since 2001 without at least one of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic in the lineup.
