Rafael Nadal reflected on his “amazing rivalry” with Novak Djokovic after their final match as professionals where Djokovic triumphed 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) in the third-place playoff at the Six Kings Slam exhibition in Saudi Arabia. The 38-year-old Nadal, who announced his retirement from tennis at the season’s end expressed gratitude for their shared experiences on the court, stating that Djokovic helped him push his limits.
“Without that, I would probably not be the player that I am today,” Nadal said during a post-match interview, where he received a golden tennis racquet as a tribute. As Nadal prepares for his final appearance with Spain at the Davis Cup Finals next month, he reflects on his career which includes a record 14 French Open titles and a total of 22 Grand Slam victories.
“What I will miss is almost everything,” he admitted. “It’s been a dream come true to play for nearly 20 years and to compete in the best venues worldwide. I can’t thank everyone enough for their support and love.” Meanwhile, Djokovic, who holds a record 24 Grand Slam titles praised Rafael Nadal after their match expressing deep respect for him as both an athlete and a person.
“The rivalry has been incredible and intense,” Djokovic remarked, suggesting they one day share a drink on the beach and reminisce. He also acknowledged Nadal’s significant impact on tennis, stating, “You have left an incredible legacy.” In addition, in the exhibition’s final, world number one Jannik Sinner defeated Carlos Alcaraz, the second-ranked player, coming back from a set down to win 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-3, thus claiming the $6 million prize.
