Simona Halep a two-time Grand Slam champion has raised concerns over the inconsistent handling of tennis doping cases by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA). The controversy began after world number two Iga Swiatek received a one-month suspension for testing positive for the banned substance trimetazidine (TMZ), a heart medication. Halep, who faced her own doping struggles tested positive for roxadustat an anti-anaemia drug in 2022.
The ITIA banned her for four years but her ban was later reduced to nine months after an appeal. She has consistently maintained her innocence, claiming that she unknowingly consumed a contaminated supplement. Halep vocal about her experience, questioned why Swiatek’s case received different treatment. “I stand and ask myself, why is there such a big difference in treatment and judgment?” she posted on Instagram.
Simona Halep criticized the ITIA for its harsher approach to her case while Swiatek, who tested positive for TMZ in an out-of-competition sample in August received a much lighter penalty. The ITIA responded by explaining that each case is unique with different circumstances. They clarified that Swiatek’s contamination came from a regulated non-prescription medication, melatonin which she took for sleep issues.
The ITIA emphasized that comparing the two cases is unhelpful due to the distinct nature of the substances involved. Swiatek’s suspension follows a similar case with world number one Jannik Sinner, who tested positive for clostebol. The ITIA stated that they base their approach to each case on the facts and evidence, urging players to exercise caution when taking supplements.
