Stefano Vukov Suspended by WTA Amid Misconduct Probe

Stefano Vukov former coach of world number six Elena Rybakina faces a provisional suspension from the WTA as they investigate his behavior. The 37-year-old, who guided Rybakina to her 2022 Wimbledon title, allegedly breached the WTA’s Code of Conduct. However, the WTA has not disclosed specific details. The suspension blocks Vukov from accessing player-only areas at WTA events including practice courts and training facilities.

The investigation’s origins remain unclear and neither Rybakina nor any other source has confirmed filing the complaint. Vukov denies the allegations, stating, “I never abused anyone.” The WTA publicly acknowledged the suspension to counter misinformation but declined to share further details. Concerns about Vukov’s behavior toward Rybakina have repeatedly surfaced in recent seasons with critics questioning his communication style on and off the court.

Former Grand Slam doubles champion Pam Shriver criticized his treatment of Rybakina during her 2023 Australian Open run, urging her to work with a coach who “speaks and treats her with respect.” Despite these criticisms, Rybakina dismissed such claims as “disturbing” and “fake news.” Rybakina recently announced plans to reinstate Stefano Vukov as her coach, drawing additional scrutiny. Shriver condemned the decision on social media, urging the tennis community to address “known abuse and manipulative behaviors.”

Vukov started coaching Rybakina during her teenage years and played a key role in her rise to the top tier of the WTA. Their partnership ended before the 2023 US Open when Goran Ivanisevic, a former Wimbledon champion and Novak Djokovic’s long-time coach, began working with Rybakina on a trial basis. Ivanisevic’s representatives confirmed his ongoing trial period with Rybakina which both parties will review after the Australian Open.
