Tallon Griekspoor led the Netherlands to their first Davis Cup final securing a 2-0 victory over Germany. Botic van de Zandschulp, who famously defeated Rafael Nadal in the final match of Nadal’s career earlier in the week gave the Dutch team a 1-0 lead with a hard-fought 6-4 6-7 (12-14) 6-3 win over Daniel Altmaier in the opening singles match. Van de Zandschulp needed 10 match points to clinch the victory.
Griekspoor then sealed the win, coming from a set down to beat Jan-Lennard Struff 6-7 (4-7) 7-5 6-4 ensuring the Netherlands’ place in the final without needing a deciding doubles match. “We believed in ourselves so much, we always felt this was possible,” Griekspoor said after his win. The Netherlands will face either defending champions Italy led by world number one Jannik Sinner or Australia in the final.
Netherlands captain Paul Haarhuis praised the team’s collective effort, noting that they lacked top-10 players but made up for it with determination and unity. Germany, aiming for their first Davis Cup final since 1993, missed world number two Alexander Zverev, who opted to skip the tournament to recover for the 2025 season.
Van de Zandschulp’s victory over Altmaier followed his emotional win over Nadal and he said, “Everything that comes next is maybe a little bit easier.” Tallon Griekspoor’s comeback win over Struff sealed the Dutch triumph.
In the aftermath, Wesley Koolhof, who will retire after the Davis Cup, received recognition for his long tennis career. “We’re not done yet, hopefully we can make something special happen here,” Koolhof said. The Netherlands now turn their focus to the final, aiming to create history.
