Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff Lead U.S. to United Cup Victory

Taylor Fritz delivered a clutch performance to secure victory for the United States in the United Cup final, edging Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in a thrilling third-set tie-break in Sydney. The world number four won the match 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) securing the decisive point after Coco Gauff had earlier defeated Iga Swiatek in the women’s singles. This marked the second consecutive win for the U.S. in the mixed-team event, following their inaugural title in 2023.

Gauff ranked third in the world, triumphed 6-4, 6-4 over Swiatek, claiming her second straight victory over the Polish player. Gauff had previously beaten Swiatek in the WTA Finals in Riyadh in November. Swiatek, now ranked second in the world, struggled with a left thigh injury throughout the match, taking a medical timeout during the second set to address the issue. After the defeat, Swiatek left the court in tears.

The win was part of an undefeated week for Gauff, who had won all six of her previous singles and doubles matches at the United Cup, building momentum for the upcoming Australian Open which starts on January 12. Gauff spoke confidently about her form, saying, “I believe I am one of the best players in the world. When I play good tennis, it’s hard to beat me.”

In the men’s final, Taylor Fritz faced a tense battle but found his rhythm at 3-3 in the final-set tie-break to finish strongly. His victory over Hurkacz clinched the title for the U.S., sparking celebrations and adding another achievement to the Americans’ successful campaign at the United Cup.
