Transvulcania Returns Strong After La Palma’s Volcanic Setback

Transvulcania, renowned for its challenging and scenic ultra-marathon on La Palma, faced a setback in 2021 when a volcanic eruption disrupted the island. Consequently, the race was canceled, only to return in 2022 under new management after severing ties with UTMB. Despite these changes, including Adidas stepping in as a sponsor, local support remained resolute, underscoring its profound significance to La Palma’s identity.

The event spans a week, offering various distances culminating in a demanding 73km ultra-marathon through volcanic terrain. Participants begin their journey under starlit skies, navigating steep volcanic ridges and descending to the coast, passing through pine forests and lunar landscapes. Notably, elite runners like Jon Albon and Tom Evans, attracted by La Palma’s distinctive trails, emphasized the enduring allure of Transvulcania.

For locals, Transvulcania embodies resilience and community spirit, playing a crucial role in revitalizing tourism post-eruption. Sergio Rodriguez, president of the island council, stressed its cultural impact beyond sports, pledging to restore its core values for the benefit of the island. Despite ongoing challenges such as the island’s recovery from the eruption and competition with other Canary Islands for tourist attention, La Palma remains steadfast in showcasing its natural beauty and hosting iconic events like Transvulcania.

Reflecting on the race’s resurgence, Albon lauded its vibrant atmosphere and competitive ethos, echoing the essence of trail-running. As La Palma continues its path to recovery, Transvulcania serves as a testament to overcoming adversity, spotlighting the island’s rugged charm and warm hospitality to a global audience of trail-running enthusiasts.
