MMA fighter Paddy ‘The Baddy’ Pimblett, 29, shows off scars from six surgeries and reflects on his fighting journey since age 15. Training at Liverpool’s Next Generation Gym with Molly ‘Meatball’ McCann, 34, both prepare for critical fights in Manchester after 18 turbulent months. Head coaches Paul Rimmer and Ellis Hampson founded the gym 20 years ago to build Liverpool’s MMA community. Rimmer, inspired by his training in California under Chris ‘The Westside Strangler’ Brennan, returned with a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt to spread the MMA brand.
Next Generation Gym, located in Liverpool’s Fabric District, fosters a diverse community including under-16s and 15 professional fighters across major MMA promotions. The atmosphere emphasizes concentration and camaraderie. McCann, after two losses, dropped a weight division and focused on grappling, securing a win in February. She now aims to “destroy” Bruna Brasil in Manchester. Adam Cullen, inspired by Pimblett, also trains here.
Despite setbacks, he finds the gym’s support invaluable. Pimblett, who faced both triumphs and criticism, notably promoted mental health awareness after a friend’s suicide. Now preparing to fight Bobby ‘King’ Green, he focuses on improving his striking. The gym also supports future generations. McCann, a board member at the English Mixed Martial Arts Association, helps develop competitive pathways for young fighters.
Rimmer’s son Jack, 16, aims to turn professional and eventually take over the gym. Rimmer sees the legacy continuing with younger, well-trained fighters, ensuring the sport’s growth in Liverpool.
