Will Smith, the San Jose Sharks’ 2023 No. 4 overall pick expressed excitement about facing Patrick Kane for the first time in his rookie season. When asked if he sees himself as the Jonathan Toews to Macklin Celebrini’s Kane, Smith smiled and confirmed, “That’s the plan.” Kane, now with the Detroit Red Wings after a legendary career with the Chicago Blackhawks is someone Smith has always admired. Kane’s three Stanley Cups and 1,225 career points left a lasting impact on the 19-year-old forward, who grew up a Chicago Blackhawks fan.

Smith described Kane as his idol, saying, “I was a big Chicago fan too, so he’s definitely the guy that I kind of tried to play like, and he’s definitely my favorite player.” Kane’s influence on Smith is clear, as Smith recalls spending hours watching Kane’s highlight reels on YouTube and then trying to replicate his moves on the ice. “He’s just silky out there,” Will Smith said, praising Kane’s smooth and effortless style of play.

Smith’s rookie campaign has already seen him face off against another idol, Sidney Crosby in a recent 4-3 shootout loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. However, his upcoming game against Kane has him particularly excited. Smith said he’s eager to experience playing against Kane in person and noted how his idol’s skills stood out on screen and in real life. This matchup is a milestone for Smith, who continues to follow in the footsteps of his heroes while carving out his own path in the NHL.
