Jurgen Klopp Emotional Farewell to Liverpool
Jurgen Klopp wrote, “Giving up is definitely not in the Scouse dictionary,” in an emotional open letter to his adoptive city. Ahead of his final match with the Reds on Sunday, Klopp described Liverpool as “the city of open arms” in a letter published by the Liverpool Echo.
Klopp, who moved to Merseyside with his wife Ulla when he became manager in 2015, reflected on his deep connection to the city. “Liverpool is a city that we lived in and worked in, but it is also a place that we fell in love with,” he wrote. “We owe it so much.”
He praised Liverpool as “a place that welcomes you like a son and does not care where you come from,” expressing pride in the privilege of being embraced by the city. During his tenure, Klopp led the club to become champions of Europe in 2019 and win the Premier League the following year.
A self-described “boy from the Black Forest,” Klopp felt honored to receive the Freedom of Liverpool in 2022. He also formed strong ties with the families of the 97 fans who perished in the 1989 Hillsborough stadium disaster.
In his letter, Jurgen Klopp emphasized the resilience and unity of Liverpool’s people: “The biggest lesson I will take with me is that giving up is definitely not in the Scouse dictionary. If you are from here, you are not just ready to fight; you actually want to fight. Moreover, the way you stand together, even when the odds are against you, shows that it is still possible to win. I love this more than I could ever say.”
