Christian Horner: Acquiring Adrian Newey Would Be Complex for F1 Competitors

Christian Horner cautioned Red Bull competitors that acquiring Adrian Newey services would pose significant challenges in today’s Formula 1 landscape. Despite the budget cap restricting overall team expenditure, drivers and the three highest-paid employees remain exempt. Horner explained that Red Bull has adapted to Newey unique approach over his 18 years tenure with the team.

Horner emphasized the complexities involved in hiring Newey, especially considering the current Formula 1 regulations and the way Newey operates. While Ferrari and Aston Martin are reportedly interested in Newey, Williams team boss James Vowles has also held discussions with him.

Since joining Red Bull in 2006 after leaving McLaren, Newey has molded the design team to his specifications remaining the only Formula 1 designer to work primarily with pencil and paper before transitioning designs to CAD software.

Horner noted that Red Bull has adjusted to Newey methods and prepared for his anticipated departure in early 2025 by developing other team members in recent years. He cautioned that other teams might struggle to accommodate Newey working style within the constraints of Formula 1’s current regulations.

Despite these challenges, Red Bull continues to lead both World Championships this season with Max Verstappen dominating the Drivers’ standings and the team maintaining a significant lead over Ferrari in the Constructors’ standings after the Miami Grand Prix.
