Ding Junhui Triumphs to Win First Ranking Title in 5 Years

Ding Junhui claimed his first ranking title in five years by defeating England’s Chris Wakelin 10-7 in the final of the International Championship in Nanjing, China. The victory marked Ding’s first title since his third UK Championship win in 2019 and ended a string of three final losses. Wakelin, who had opened up a 4-1 lead with impressive breaks of 63, 92, 85 and 64, looked to be in control early.

However, Ding mounted a comeback, winning six consecutive frames. The turning point came when Wakelin in a crucial moment missed a red along the cushion during a potential clearance. Ding capitalized on this mistake, securing a 6-4 lead. Wakelin, who won his first ranking title at the 2023 Shoot Out, fought back with breaks of 85 and 82 to reduce Ding’s lead to 7-6.

But Ding Junhui responded with a stunning 98 break, re-establishing a two-frame cushion. Although Wakelin won a scrappy 15th frame, Ding sealed the win with three consecutive frames to take the match 10-7. Ding, visibly emotional, expressed his joy at the victory, especially with his family in attendance.

“I didn’t know my family were going to be at the trophy presentation, it was great to see them,” said Ding. “My kids hadn’t seen me win anything live before.” This win marked a significant moment in Ding’s career, as he ended a long wait for a ranking title and demonstrated his resilience in a thrilling comeback.
